This book is not an argument about whether that finding is true. It is an account of how a society reaches the point where such a thing can be done in its name — and of how the rest of the world watched, and called it something else.

Cult is an easy word to throw and a hard one to earn. Here it is not an insult but a description: a set of conditions under which a closed system takes over a person’s capacity to think. Each condition is set out, and evidenced.

What did the founders want? They said so plainly, in an age when colonisation was a description rather than a charge — the body funding it called itself the Jewish Colonisation Association, and in 1923 Jabotinsky wrote that settlement could proceed only behind a wall of force the natives could not break.

How does a system get intelligent, decent people to say nothing? By making the unsaid sentence cost more than most people can pay. And where a witness contradicts the doctrine, the witness becomes the problem: soldiers who describe what they did, and Jews who object, are answered with an accusation about who they are.

And why does it grow more extreme, more casual about cruelty? Because a closed system cannot read failure as evidence against itself. Every failure confirms what it already believes. The conduct escalates — and the threshold moves with it.

This is how it happened. This is how it is still happening. And this is what it takes for a person to walk out.
